Fullerton holds a distinction among Orange County cities that surprises many people: it contains more dangerous intersections than any other city in the county. A nine-year analysis of intersection-related traffic collisions across Orange County found that 18 of the 50 most dangerous intersections in the entire county — and six of the top ten — are located within Fullerton city limits. Despite Fullerton having over 2,100 fewer total collisions than Anaheim during the same study period, Anaheim placed zero intersections in the top 50. This is not a raw-numbers problem. It is a concentrated-severity problem at specific, well-documented locations throughout the city.
Fullerton’s crash rate per capita places it above the Orange County average, and comparative OC data specifically identifies Fullerton as one of the more dangerous cities in the county to drive in on a per-capita basis. This intersection has accumulated more than 78 documented crashes since 2010, with a large majority resulting in injuries. Chapman Avenue runs east-west through Fullerton’s commercial and university district, and its crossing with Harbor Boulevard — one of Orange County’s primary north-south arterials — creates a high-volume, high-conflict zone where accidents have been reported consistently for years. The combination of through-traffic speeds, residential and university access patterns, and commercial driveway activity produces conditions that have established this crossing as one of Orange County’s most injury-producing intersections.
Among Fullerton’s most consistently reported dangerous intersections, Euclid and Orangethorpe has recorded injury totals that outpace even its crash count — meaning more people are getting hurt per crash at this location than at typical intersections. State Route 91 passes through Fullerton’s northern edge and carries massive commuter loads. State Route 57 runs along Fullerton’s western boundary. Both corridors generate high-speed freeway accident activity — rear-end crashes during commute-hour congestion and higher-speed lane-change and merge accidents during off-peak periods. The SR-57/SR-91 interchange near Anaheim’s border is among the more complex traffic structures in this part of Orange County.
Beyond its intersection with Chapman, Harbor Boulevard runs the full north-south length of Fullerton and is one of Orange County’s most consistently accident-prone arterials based on total crash volume. Its sheer length and the density of commercial activity along it make Harbor one of the primary accident corridors in the city.
Fullerton’s active nightlife environment — centered around the Cal State Fullerton campus area, the downtown entertainment district along Commonwealth Avenue, and the city’s well-established bar and restaurant corridor — contributes to elevated DUI-related accident rates, particularly on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Orange County data specifically identifies Fullerton as having a higher concentration of alcohol-related and nighttime crashes compared to many neighboring cities.
