What the Super Lawyers Selection Is

Super Lawyers is a lawyer rating service owned by Thomson Reuters. It identifies lawyers in each state through a multi-step process: peer nominations from other lawyers, independent research into professional achievement, and evaluation by a panel of lawyers in the same practice area. Lawyers do not apply, and they cannot pay to be selected.

David Gammill was selected to Super Lawyers for 2026 and 2027, in the practice area of personal injury, for California. Before that, he was selected to Rising Stars in 2019. From the DA’s Office to the Plaintiff’s Table

David started his career as a prosecutor. He served seven years as a Deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles County, trying serious felony cases to juries. That background shapes how he handles injury cases now: he prepares each case as a trial lawyer would, because he expects the case may be decided by twelve people in a courtroom rather than by an adjuster on the phone.

The Record Behind the Selection

• A $21.1 million wrongful death verdict. A jury returned the verdict against Caltrans in a case involving a crash cushion that had not been reset after an earlier impact. Before trial, the defense had offered $10,000. TopVerdict.com listed the verdict among its Top 10 Verdicts in Los Angeles in 2021.
• A $16 million school sexual abuse verdict. After an earlier trial ended in a mistrial, the plaintiff retained David as lead counsel for the retrial against Beverly Hills Unified School District. The jury found the District negligent in supervising and retaining the abuser and found $16 million in damages, entirely non-economic.
• A $12 million whistleblower retaliation verdict. A jury verdict in an employment retaliation case.
• $1.5 Million · School Negligent Supervision. A school that was supposed to be watching, and was not.

Civil Rights and Wrongful Death Cases in the News

Much of David’s work outside personal injury has been in civil rights and wrongful death cases against public agencies. Several have been covered by California news outlets. The matters below are described as the parties alleged them; where a case is still pending, nothing has been decided.

Pomona Police Department. David represented the family of a teenager who alleged that Pomona officers beat him at the Los Angeles County Fair in 2015 and then misrepresented what happened. NBC Los Angeles reported on the family’s claims in 2016, and ABC7 reported in 2017 that three officers had been federally indicted in connection with the incident and its aftermath.

Echo Park protest, Los Angeles Police Department. David represented an Echo Park resident who alleged in a federal lawsuit that LAPD officers assaulted her in an alley behind her home during the March 2021 Echo Park Lake protest. The Los Angeles Times covered the filing, and quoted David saying the officers were “acting no different than gangsters.”

Mistaken identity arrest. David filed a federal lawsuit for a California man who alleged he was jailed for five days after being mistaken for a sex offender during a traffic stop. The Sacramento Bee reported on the suit in 2025.

Potrero Annex-Terrace fire, San Francisco. After a man died in a January 2023 fire at the Potrero Annex-Terrace public housing complex, David filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging the property was dangerously mismanaged. The San Francisco Standard covered the filing in 2024. The case is pending.

Fountain Avenue, West Hollywood. David signed the complaint in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of a cyclist killed in a July 2025 hit-and-run on Fountain Avenue. The suit alleges a dangerous condition of public property. WEHO Times reported the filing in September 2026. The case is pending.

What David Handles

David’s practice is plaintiff-side: personal injury, wrongful death, and civil rights cases. That includes car, truck, and motorcycle crashes; deaths caused by negligent drivers, companies, or public agencies; sexual abuse cases against schools and institutions; brain and other catastrophic injuries; premises liability; and dog bites.
